Essex ActivAte is the name for the Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme across Essex, run by Active Essex, Essex County Council and Thurrock Council, on behalf of the Department for Education.

This programme aims to support the physical and mental wellbeing of primary and secondary school children, through engagement in a wide variety of enrichment and physical activities, and provision of a nutritious, school standard meal. Working with a network of trusted local delivery partners, Active Essex run free clubs during the school holidays for children and young people who are eligible for benefits based free school meals, as well as those from low income working families who would benefit from this extra support.

After three years of HAF delivery, the Department for Education funding is set to expire at the end of 2024 and the future of the programme is uncertain. As a result, Essex County Council’s Research & Citizen Insight Team was asked to evaluate the Essex ActivAte programme focussing on the impact that it has on children, young people and families.

We have three HAF evaluation reports on the following:

  1. The Impact on Children Young People and Families
  2. Social Impact and Valuation Report 2022 – 2024
  3. Impact on Local Organisations
