Healthy life expectancy is the number of years a baby born today is expected to live in 'good health', provided that current mortality and health trends remain fixed over their lifetime. There is interest in understanding how healthy life expectancy varies within Essex. This has not been possible due to the data not being available at small areas below district level.

By combining internal mortality data with good health prevalence from the census, ECCs public health intelligence team have produced small area estimates of healthy life expectancy for the first time. The analysis shows significant inequality in healthy life expectancy across Essex, and the gap between the areas with the highest & lowest healthy life expectancy is widening over time.

As these estimates rely on census data, this analysis can not be updated. The official healthy life statistics is updated annually on fingertips.

On this page there is: A powerpoint pack showing healthy life expectancy across Essex, the underlying data at 2021 MSOA and district level for Essex, and aggregated healthy life expectancy estimates for West Essex (Epping Forest, Harlow, and Uttlesford), North East Essex (Colchester and Tendring), and Mid Essex (Basildon, Braintree, Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Maldon, Rochford).
