This analysis evaluates the quality of housing for elderly residents split by tenure type: Owner-occupancy, Private renting, and social renting. Principally, housing quality is assessed in terms of the size, type, and age of the properties. Additionally, housing quality is evaluated in terms of the energy efficiency ratings of individual aspects of a dwelling, as well as the overall EPC rating.

Over the past 17 years, owner occupancy has become far less common amongst households younger than 65. All else equal, the high rate of occupancy for those in later life is very likely to deteriorate in the future. Households between the ages of 45-64 in low earning occupations are now far less likely to be owner occupants when compared to 10 years ago.
