The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) is the official measure of relative deprivation in England. It is part of the Indices of Deprivation (IoD), which look at different aspects of disadvantage. IMD uses a well-established method to define deprivation broadly, covering many areas of life such as income, employment, health, education, housing, and living environment.
The IMD 2025 initial report highlights key patterns and insights across Greater Essex, helping to understand how deprivation varies across local areas.
In addition to the report, we are also including an interactive dashboard and a short user guide which will allow users to explore areas in different domains. This version will be further developed and updated. For any further enquiries, email: [email protected]
Updates (January 2026)
The following improvements have been made to the interactive dashboard:
• Page 2 – “IMD 2025 Map”
Added a Built-Up Areas (BUA) filter, enabling users to view LSOAs contained within BUAs.
The BUA lookup is based on: LSOA (2021) → BUA → LAD → Region (December 2022) Best Fit in England & Wales (V2).
Note: 80 of Greater Essex LSOAs do not map to any BUA.
• Page 3 – “LSOA Proportions”
Added quintile classification, alongside the existing deciles.
Introduced an area filter, allowing users to select specific districts.
Greater Essex and Essex groupings have also been added as selectable areas.
• Page 5 – “Time Series”
Added Built Up Areas as a new geography type.
BUAs are now available in addition to the existing District, MOSA, and Ward options.
• Page 7 – “Subdomains” (New Page)
Introduced a new page allowing users to explore selected IMD domains and their subdomains.
